• In 2024, despite reaching a historical high, remittances to Mexico (+2.3%) had one of the worst performances in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region, compared to Colombia (+17.4%), Nicaragua (+12.5%), Guatemala (+8.6%), Brazil (+6.3%), Honduras (+6.2%), Dominican Republic (+5.9%) and El Salvador (+2.5%).
• Migrant apprehensions in the United States are at their lowest levels since the start of the last pandemic: they fell to 29,100 apprehensions in January 2025, -76.6% compared to January 2024.
• It is not evident that there is a “Trump Effect” in the flow of remittances to these eight analyzed countries in Latin America and the Caribbean between November 2024 and January 2025. Only an atypical increase is observed in these months in remittances to Nicaragua.
• In the case of Mexico, most migrants have citizenship or residency in the United States, and only a third are in an undocumented status. Migrants with documents also send remittances, in addition to having greater economic capacity to do so.
